Richard, what is your role at Isothermic?
I’m the Shipping Supervisor. I handle deliveries and loading.
How long have you been part of the team?
It’s been 22 years now.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
Communicating with people. Time flies by—I never see the days go by. I like having work to do. I enjoy staying busy! Days with nothing to do? Not for me.
We love people like that! What does a typical day at Isothermic look like for a shipping supervisor?
I make delivery-related phone calls. I contact contractors to coordinate deliveries, plan delivery schedules, prepare trucks for loading, organize routes, check in with my team, and verify inventory.
How has your job changed over the past few years?
It hasn’t changed that much—it’s mostly what I’ve always done. The main difference is that I’m now more focused on shipping. I used to plan garages and warehouse operations as well, but in recent years, I’ve concentrated more on shipping because we have many more large-scale projects, which means more shipments.
What skills or knowledge are required for your job?
You need to know Law 430 (transportation regulations), be familiar with Quebec geography, have basic computer skills, and understand transportation opportunities. It’s also important to know subcontractors and maintain good business relationships with them.
What advice would you give to people entering the job market?
For those who want to do my job? Haha! Take it seriously—but always keep a good attitude. And when you talk to customers, never tell nonsense. If something goes wrong and a window is broken because we made a mistake, I’ll say it. I always tell the truth—it always goes over better. Never try to sneak one past people.
Which departments do you work with most closely?
All of them. I collaborate and communicate with everyone. Even as a supervisor, there’s still a lot of human resources work involved.
What are your favorite hobbies, and how do you unwind?
On weekends, I do DIY projects and build houses. I work all the time— haha! I love working with my hands and making furniture. I also love fishing and hockey—especially hockey! In fact, I’m going back to playing hockey at 64 years old this winter. I stopped at 50 because of an injury, but now I’m starting again!
Thank you so much, Richard. We’re lucky to have you on the team!
