Solar Shades

Did you know it is strongly recommended to avoid installing solar shades inside the frame of PVC windows?
Here’s why.

What You Need to Know
1. Heat buildup
When opaque solar shades remain closed for long periods, they trap solar heat and concentrate it against the window glass. Combined with direct sunlight, the glass acts like a magnifying lens, causing a significant rise in temperature on the interior side of the window.
2. PVC deformation
PVC, which is commonly used to manufacture window frames, can deform when exposed to high temperatures — typically around 68°C (154°F). Due to the greenhouse effect created by solar shades installed within the frame, PVC temperatures can exceed this threshold, potentially leading to permanent deformation of the window frames.
How can you prevent the risk of deformation?
1. Install shades outside the window frame
The primary recommendation is to install your shades, blinds or curtains outside the window frame. This helps block solar heat while allowing air circulation, preventing heat from becoming trapped inside the window opening.
2. Ensure regular ventilation
If installing shades outside the frame isn’t possible, it’s essential to allow regular air circulation within the window area. Open your shades, blinds or curtains during the day to let heat escape. This simple habit can help maintain lower temperatures and reduce stress on the PVC frame.
By following these best practices, you can help prevent PVC window frame deformation and extend the lifespan of your windows.
