Sustainable Windows: Why True Sustainability Must Also Stand the Test of Time

At Isothermic, we believe the word sustainability should always have two meanings.

The first relates to our impact on the planet: the materials we use, the resources we consume, their circularity, and the companies we choose to work with.

The second is more tangible, but just as important: how long can a product truly fulfill its purpose and maintain its performance?

For us, a sustainable window must therefore be better for the environment and designed to last.

Choosing suppliers moving in the same direction

About three years ago, Isothermic began gradually transitioning to certain new suppliers. The decision was not based solely on price or technical performance.

We also wanted to work with companies whose environmental trajectory aligned with our own.

Today, the impact of that choice is becoming increasingly tangible.

In August 2026, Roto hardware ranges achieved Cradle to Cradle Certified® Full Scope Bronze, version 4.1.

Roto thus became the first hardware manufacturer to achieve this certification for its entire portfolio of European-groove aluminium tilt-and-turn window hardware. That is significant.

Cradle to Cradle Certified® does not simply assess whether a material can be recycled. It evaluates a product across five categories: material health, product circularity, clean air and climate protection, water and soil stewardship, and social fairness.

Our partner Reynaers Aluminium is following a similar path. Several of its window, sliding door, and façade systems—including MasterLine, SlimLine, HiFinity, MasterPatio, and several ConceptWall systems—are now Cradle to Cradle Certified® Full Scope Bronze v4.1.

This confirms something that matters to us: the partners we have chosen are also investing in more circular design and more responsible use of resources.

But better materials are not enough

We believe there is a second dimension of sustainability that receives far less attention in the building industry: the product’s actual service life.

A product may use responsibly sourced materials and still lose its properties quickly, require significant repairs, or need to be replaced prematurely.

Every replacement requires new raw materials, energy, transportation, manufacturing, and labour.

That is why our approach to sustainability directly influences our research and development.

We are not simply looking to improve a window’s performance when it leaves the factory. We want to understand how its materials, assemblies, and components will perform after years of use and exposure to real-world conditions.

Designing a window for today… and tomorrow

This philosophy changes the questions our product development teams need to ask.

How will a material respond to significant temperature fluctuations? How will mechanical components age after thousands of operating cycles? How will seals, assemblies, finishes, and materials retain their properties over time? How can we minimize potential weak points that could lead to premature performance loss?

Initial performance remains essential. But we want to progressively go further: to design for performance over time.

This means focusing our development around four key principles:

  • selecting materials and components whose origin, composition, and circularity can be better documented
  • favouring partners that invest in sustainability and the continuous improvement of their own products
  • designing assemblies that can better withstand mechanical and climatic stresses
  • developing and testing our products with aging in mind, rather than considering only their performance at the time of certification

Service life is also a measure of environmental performance

This idea may seem obvious, but it fundamentally changes the way we look at a product.

A window is not truly sustainable simply because it delivers strong energy performance or because some of its materials are recyclable.

It must bring several qualities together.

It must reduce energy loss. It must use resources intelligently. It must withstand the conditions to which it will actually be exposed. And above all, it must continue to do its job for as long as possible.

Environmental sustainability and technical longevity should therefore not be treated as two separate strategies.

For Isothermic, they are two sides of the same approach.

Building with fewer compromises and more evidence

The growing adoption of certifications such as Cradle to Cradle Certified® by partners such as Reynaers and now Roto reinforces our belief that the industry is evolving.

Tomorrow, simply stating that a product is “sustainable” will no longer be enough.

Increasingly, manufacturers will need to explain what a product is made of, how it is manufactured, how its materials can be reused, and how long it can maintain the performance it was designed to deliver.

This is the direction Isothermic wants to pursue.

Because preserving resources starts with choosing them more carefully.

But it also comes down to a much simpler idea:

what we manufacture should be designed to last.
